Around 5.5 million tonnes of cargo and some 1,700 vessel calls pass through Mersa Sfax each year, making it Tunisia's second-largest port. Officially the Sfax–Sidi Youssef multipurpose port, it concentrates on dry bulk – phosphate and its derivatives, sea salt and cereals – handled across nine quays offering roughly 2,500 m of berth and about 10.5 m alongside depth. Containerised liner traffic is limited here; the port's strength is bulk and breakbulk rather than boxes. Its hinterland, the industrial and agricultural region around Sfax, is served mainly by road, with rail feeding phosphate from the interior. Forwarders moving containers usually route them via Radès near Tunis, while liquid bulk and oil are handled at La Skhira and Gabès.
