Part naval base, part regional trading port, Mersa Matruh combines two roles on Egypt's Mediterranean coast some 240 km west of Alexandria. The old harbour at the eastern end of the inlet is a small commercial port, while the newer lagoon facility serves the navy and is being converted for commercial use. The town works mainly as a market and distribution centre for its agricultural hinterland and has taken on transshipment traffic as mineral exploration in the governorate has grown. Regular container or liner services are not established here, so such cargo moves through the major gateways of Alexandria/El Dekheila or Damietta. For forwarders, Mersa Matruh is better suited to regional breakbulk and project cargo than to standardised container flows.
