More than 3.5 million TEU passed through AU MEL in 2025 — a second straight annual record and over a third of Australia's container trade, making Melbourne the country's largest container and general-cargo port. The boxes are split across nine berths at three terminals: Patrick at Swanson Dock East, DP World at Swanson Dock West and the automated VICT facility at Webb Dock East. A dedicated automotive terminal at Webb Dock handles vehicle imports, while multipurpose and bulk berths cover grain, forest products and project cargo. Refrigerated exports of meat and dairy are a significant flow, and more than 660,000 TEU of export boxes — largely agricultural goods from south-east Australia — moved through the port's biosecurity and customs controls in 2025. Road and rail links carry cargo across Victoria and into New South Wales and South Australia. To address capacity limits forecast for the late 2030s, the port plans a new rail terminal at Webb Dock and a fourth container terminal at Webb Dock North by 2036. East-coast shippers can alternatively route through Port Botany in Sydney or the Port of Brisbane.
