A purpose-built canal port at kilometre 37.5 on the right bank of the Danube–Black Sea Canal, Medgidia links Danube barge traffic with the deep-sea gateway of Constanța. Despite a "very small" rating in physical port registers, it moves roughly 11.5 million tonnes a year, ranking among Romania's largest riverine ports. Cargo is dominated by dry bulk, breakbulk and scrap, and the site is home to a dome-type clinker store completed in 2009 — one of the largest cement clinker storage facilities in the world. Road and rail connections feed the Romanian interior, supporting combined barge-rail-truck movements. There is no conventional container terminal here: maritime box traffic and customs clearance belong to Constanța on the Black Sea, with Galați as an upstream alternative. For forwarders, Medgidia is a tool for bulk and project cargo on the Danube corridor rather than for containerised goods.
