Deep-sea fish, not freight boxes, defines Mazara del Vallo on the south-western tip of Sicily, Italy's largest fishing port. A fleet of about 300 ocean-going trawlers and more than 3,000 crew lands roughly 200,000 quintals of catch a year, trawling depths of 700 to 800 metres.
