Despite sitting inside the Port of New York and New Jersey, Maurer is not a port a forwarder can book cargo through — it is a small private industrial berth on the Arthur Kill in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. This tidal strait between New Jersey and Staten Island, a core stretch of the region's so-called Chemical Coast, sees more than 3,000 ship movements a year past refineries, tank farms and chemical plants. No common-user container, breakbulk or reefer handling takes place at Maurer; its roughly 11 m of depth serves industrial owners' own traffic. Containerised and conventional cargo for the area moves through Port Newark-Elizabeth, home to the Maher and APM terminals. Liquid and dry bulk is worked at the neighbouring Arthur Kill facilities around Perth Amboy, Sewaren and Carteret.
