Home to roughly 75 year-round residents, Matinicus is the most remote inhabited island on the Maine coast, set in Penobscot Bay some 20 miles off Rockland. The harbour supports an active lobster and crab fleet from private docks and wharves, but has no commercial container, customs or general-cargo facilities. The Maine State Ferry Service vehicle ferry M/V Everett Libby links the island to Rockland roughly once a month in winter and about four times a month in summer. Commercial freight is handled at the mainland ports of Rockland and Searsport.
