On the western shore of Matanzas Bay sit Cuba's largest supertanker base and the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant, and they define what this port is about: energy, not boxes. Matanzas handles mainly crude oil and dry bulk, with berths of roughly 9 to 12 m depth taking tankers and bulkers. In early 2026 a tanker carrying about 700,000 barrels of Russian Urals crude discharged here for the island's refineries. Scheduled liner-container traffic and large-scale breakbulk customs clearance are effectively absent. Forwarders moving containers or project cargo are better served through the Mariel special-development port or Havana. For energy and bulk shipments, however, Matanzas remains Cuba's central call.
