ICTSI, through the Matadi Gateway Terminal joint venture, operates the Democratic Republic of Congo's leading container facility on the lower Congo River. Sitting about 150 km upstream on the river's left bank, Matadi is the closest port to the capital Kinshasa, giving cargo owners the lowest inland transport cost of any DRC option. The terminal offers two 175 m berths, mobile cranes with twin-lift spreaders and 125 t heavy-lift capability, reach stackers and the Navis N4 operating system, with current capacity around 175,000 TEU and a planned expansion to roughly 400,000 TEU. It handles containers and general cargo for the landlocked interior's import and export flows. As a river port, draft limits vessel size, so larger ships often call at Pointe-Noire in neighbouring Congo-Brazzaville or the deepwater Banana port now under construction. Customs clearance at Matadi averages about seven days, the fastest in the country. Road link N1 and the Matadi–Kinshasa railway connect the port to its hinterland. For freight bound for Kinshasa and western DRC, Matadi is the principal maritime access point.
