Massacre Bay earned its place in the record in May 1943 as the main U.S. landing point in the Battle of Attu, and the piers and Navy installations around it date from that wartime build-up. Today the inlet on the south-east coast of uninhabited Attu Island — the westernmost of the Aleutians — has no commercial port activity beyond decaying military remnants. For freight purposes its relevance is effectively nil: there are no scheduled calls and no cargo, customs or container facilities. Commercial shipments to the western Aleutians move via Adak, with larger volumes handled at Dutch Harbor (Unalaska).
