On the Korea Strait some 35 km west of Busan, Masan (KR MAS) moves over 10 million tonnes of cargo annually, serving the Masan Free Trade Zone and the Changwon National Industrial Complex. The port's 80,000 m² vehicle yard is dominated in 2026 by the GM Changwon plant, running at around 95% capacity and producing some 280,000 Trax Crossovers a year; GM accounts for about 55% of cargo volume at Masan Gapo New Port. In April 2026 GM firmly rejected rumours of a Korea exit, confirming the plant's medium-term commitment and its importance for the port's vehicle-export traffic. Eight general-cargo piers with sixteen berths and a container terminal with around 500,000 TEU capacity support eleven international liner services to China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Dedicated quays handle cement (Ssangyong/Hanla, up to 2.3 million tonnes), iron (Doosan/Pochul, around 2.0 million tonnes) and petroleum (SK pier). Road and rail tie the port into the Changwon and Busan industrial belt. For large container volumes and transhipment, nearby Busan is the primary choice.
