Around 13,000 tonnes of topside modules for the White Rose offshore oil field were fabricated at the Marystown shipyard on Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula, built in 1967 and expanded with the Cow Head facility in 1992. Operated by Kiewit Offshore Services, the site specializes in large-scale steel fabrication for Grand Banks oil and gas projects, including work on the Hibernia and Terra Nova fields and the SeaRose FPSO. This is an industrial fabrication port rather than a commercial cargo terminal — there is no scheduled container or general cargo shipping, and freight movements are limited to heavy-lift vessels carrying finished modules and construction materials. Road access runs via the Trans-Canada Highway to St. John's, about 220 kilometres away, which together with Argentia serves as the nearest port for conventional container and breakbulk cargo. Kiewit sold the original Marystown shipyard property in 2017 but retained the neighbouring Cow Head fabrication yard.
