A 610-by-80-metre super dry dock, completed in 2017, sets the tone at Marugame Ko on the north coast of Shikoku: it belongs to Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan's largest shipbuilder, whose Marugame yard builds large tankers, mega container vessels and bulk carriers. Facing the Seto Inland Sea, the port is therefore geared to shipbuilding, outfitting and repair, plus ferry and local traffic such as services to the nearby Shiwaku Islands. It is not a primary gateway for liner container traffic or large-scale customs clearance. A pier depth of about 9.4 m suits mid-sized cargo and supply vessels. The adjacent Seto-Ohashi Bridge links the hinterland and Honshu by road and rail. For regional container shipments the nearby main port of Takamatsu is the natural choice, with Kobe and Osaka serving longer-haul trades.
