Operated by Malta Freeport Terminals under a long-term concession held by shipping line CMA CGM, Marsaxlokk — the Malta Freeport — is one of the Mediterranean's largest container transshipment hubs. It handled about 2.86 million TEU in 2024, of which an estimated 95 percent was transshipment: boxes relayed between east–west mainline services and feeders to North Africa, the Adriatic and the western Mediterranean. The terminal offers roughly 2,463 m of deep-water quays, around 771,000 m² of storage and 2,180 reefer plugs for temperature-controlled cargo. Depths of just over 15 m accommodate the latest large container vessels. Its position near the Suez–Gibraltar trunk route makes it an efficient relay point for carriers reshuffling cargo in the central Mediterranean. Capacity is set to rise towards 4 million TEU with the Terminal Two expansion. Volumes for Maltese imports themselves are modest, as the port serves transshipment rather than a large local hinterland. Bunkering and tanker facilities also operate in Marsaxlokk Bay.
