Trains roll onto a 1912 pocket dock 75 feet above the water and drop iron-ore pellets through about 200 concrete pockets straight into the holds of waiting Great Lakes freighters — that is Marquette's Upper Harbour in a nutshell. This Lake Superior port is a specialised loading point for taconite pellets, today mainly from the Tilden Mine on the Marquette Iron Range, with an annual capacity near 9.5 million tons. It handles essentially no containers or general cargo. Traffic is domestic, feeding Great Lakes steel mills, so there is no conventional customs clearance for overseas freight. Sailings follow the Great Lakes navigation season and pause during winter ice. For more varied cargo or larger tonnages, Duluth-Superior is the nearest alternative.
