Granted major-port status in 1963, Marmagao (Mormugao) rose to become India's leading iron-ore export gateway, peaking above 50 million tonnes a year before Goa's mining bans from 2012 cut volumes sharply. Since then the Zuari-estuary port in Goa has rebalanced towards coal imports, residual iron ore, general cargo, fertilisers and petroleum products. Adani's fully mechanised coal terminal handles Panamax and Capesize vessels, supported by a channel depth of around 14 m. Containers remain a minor part of the mix, with most boxes routed via Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or New Mangalore. Rail and road links carry cargo to the mining and industrial belts of Karnataka and Maharashtra. A cruise terminal complements the commercial cargo business.
