Marinette is a shipbuilding town first and a cargo port a distant second. On the Menominee River where it meets Green Bay on Lake Michigan, the site is dominated by the Fincantieri Marinette Marine yard, which builds surface combatants for the US Navy. A shallow channel of only about 4.9 m sharply limits commercial freight shipping, and there is no container or liner service. The yard offers extensive covered construction and warehousing space, while navigation follows the seasonal Great Lakes calendar. Road and rail provide the inland links. For bulk, breakbulk or containerised cargo, Green Bay, Escanaba or Milwaukee are the appropriate ports.
