Conceived to replace Havana as Cuba's main box port, Mariel has become the country's leading container gateway. About 45 km west of the capital, the Terminal de Contenedores del Mariel (TCM) is run by world leader PSA International of Singapore. Set in a sheltered deep-water bay, the terminal can – after dredging and channel works – handle neo-panamax ships up to 366 m long and around 15 m draft, served by four super-post-panamax quay cranes. Annual throughput runs at roughly 300,000 TEU against a built capacity of about 800,000 TEU, with long-term plans reaching 3 million TEU. The terminal sits inside the ZED Mariel special development zone, pairing container handling with industrial and logistics sites aimed at foreign investors. Road and rail link the port to Havana and the interior. The US embargo, however, materially limits traffic, and many containers leave empty. For breakbulk, bulk or cruise calls Havana remains a complement, with Santiago de Cuba serving the island's east.
