Mare Island is better understood as a ship-repair site than a cargo port, and even that role has narrowed sharply. Once a renowned US Navy shipyard near Vallejo, it was closed by the Navy in 1996 and revived from 2013 by Mare Island Dry Dock LLC for repairs and dockings – an operation that ceased on 1 January 2026 after the loss of a major US Coast Guard contract. The site offers no container or liner service; its value lay in repair work and a large graving dock rather than throughput. Sheltered on San Pablo Bay with around 7.9 m alongside, it connects to the Californian hinterland by road and rail. For containerised freight the nearby Port of Oakland is the obvious choice, while Benicia, Richmond and Stockton handle bulk, liquid and project cargo.
