First shipping crude oil more than a century ago, Marcus Hook has reinvented itself as a natural gas liquids (NGL) export terminal on the Delaware River. Operated by Energy Transfer's Sunoco unit, the former refinery now stores, chills and exports propane, butane and ethane fed by the Mariner East 1, 2 and 2X pipelines from the Marcellus and Utica shale plays. Roughly 5 million barrels of tank and underground cavern storage support cargoes bound for Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Africa and South America; in 2016 the INEOS Intrepid carried the first refrigerated US ethane to Norway from these berths. This is an energy terminal, not a container or general-cargo port: gas carriers, not box ships, work the docks. A channel of about 11 m accommodates large LPG and ethane tankers, while supply arrives chiefly by pipeline plus rail and road. For containers or breakbulk, Philadelphia (Packer Avenue) and Wilmington, Delaware are the appropriate gateways.
