Where many regional ports chase container volumes, Maputo (MZ MPM) earns its keep on bulk minerals and agricultural exports. In 2025 the Indian Ocean port handled a record 32 million tonnes, up about 3.4% year on year, dominated by chrome, iron ore, coal, magnetite, sugar, citrus and ferroalloys. Grindrod's coal-and-magnetite terminal at Matola anchors the dry-bulk side, its capacity recently expanded to around 12 million tonnes. Containers, vehicles and general cargo move across the Coastal Terminal, which offers three berths over roughly 300 metres of quay with gantry cranes. The port is run by the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC). Crucially, much of its hinterland lies abroad: rail corridors connect Maputo to Gauteng and greater Johannesburg, to Eswatini and Zimbabwe, often as their shortest route to the sea, with rail volumes rising to 11.7 million tonnes in 2025. For pure container throughput or large-scale coal exports, shippers turn to Durban and Richards Bay in South Africa.
