Managed by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), Map Ta Phut is a deep-sea industrial harbour built to serve one of the world's largest petrochemical clusters rather than general merchant shipping. Its terminals handle liquefied natural gas (LNG), petrochemical feedstocks, industrial chemicals and dry bulk feeding the adjacent refineries, steelworks and power plants in Rayong province. Annual throughput reaches roughly 16 million tonnes, almost none of it containerised or breakbulk freight. The ongoing Phase 3 expansion runs under a 35-year public-private partnership between IEAT and the GMTP consortium (Gulf and PTT Tank): the first construction stage of dredging, reclamation and breakwater works was completed in March 2025, the LNG terminal superstructure began in the fourth quarter of 2025, and commercial operations are expected from early 2029, with an initial capacity of at least 5 million tonnes of LNG a year, expandable to 10.8 million. Forwarders handling containers or conventional cargo should route through Laem Chabang, Thailand's principal container gateway about 70 km to the west, or the Port of Bangkok. In short, Map Ta Phut is best understood as a specialised energy and chemical port, not a multipurpose cargo terminal.
