Tucked into the eastern corner of the Gulf of Guacanayabo on Cuba's south-east coast, close to the Cauto River delta in Granma province, Manzanillo has served as an agricultural export outlet since the early 1800s. Its main role is transshipment of sugar, tobacco and timber drawn from the surrounding farming regions. The harbour is an open roadstead with poor shelter: cargo is worked largely at anchor, while a conventional buoy mooring handles imports of petroleum products. Vessels enter and depart in daylight only because of channel lighting, with a maximum size of around 200 m length and 10 m draft. There is no confirmed container line or large breakbulk service here. Shippers with such cargo are better served by Santiago de Cuba to the south-east or Cienfuegos on the south coast.
