# Manukau Harbor (NZ MCY)

**UN/LOCODE:** NZ MCY
**Country:** New Zealand
**Water Body:** Tasman Sea; South Pacific Ocean
**Harbor Size:** Medium
**Harbor Type:** Coastal (Natural)
**GPS:** -36.9333, 174.7833

Despite the broad expanse it covers on the map, the Manukau Harbour (NZ MCY) is not a commercial freight gateway of any scale. Its only real cargo facility was the small Port of Onehunga, historically limited to coastal vessels of about 1,000 tons; Ports of Auckland ended commercial cargo operations there in 2016, consolidating freight at the Waitematā Harbour, and the wharf was sold to Panuku in 2018. Onehunga today mainly serves the fishing fleet. The shallow harbour entrance, guarded by extensive sand bars, effectively excludes larger container or bulk ships. For containerised, breakbulk or customs-cleared cargo around Auckland, forwarders use the Port of Auckland on the Waitematā Harbour or the Port of Tauranga.
