Designed for 50,000 TEU a year, the Port of Manta actually moves only around 3,000 TEU – a gap that tells you exactly what this Ecuadorian port is really for. Manta is the country's leading fishing harbour and the self-styled "Tuna Capital of the World", with a Fishing and Cabotage Terminal offering more than 620 metres of quay; in 2022 it landed about 72,000 tonnes of industrial catch from 268 vessels. It nonetheless operates as a multipurpose facility, with two docks (200 m and 300 m) able to handle container ships, bulk carriers, ro-ro and cruise vessels, backed by roughly 150,000 m² of warehousing. Dry bulk and international fish – tuna, wheat and frozen cereals – account for about 65 percent of total throughput. Shippers needing scheduled container services should look to Guayaquil and the deep-water terminal at Posorja, while Manta plays to its strengths in fish, reefer and bulk cargo.
