Long known for its shipbuilding yards, Manitowoc on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Michigan is today best recognised as the western port of the SS Badger car ferry. Across the roughly 61-mile, four-hour crossing the vessel carries up to 180 vehicles — trucks, RVs, motorcycles and cars — and 620 passengers to Ludington, Michigan, on a route officially designated the continuation of US Highway 10; loads up to about 86 metres long and 4.7 metres wide can be accommodated. For freight, this is a seasonal RoRo shortcut for road vehicles, running May to October, that avoids the long detour around the lake through Chicago. Manitowoc remains a deep-water commercial harbour, but general-cargo and container traffic is limited and no container line calls here. For conventional bulk or container shipments on the western lakeshore, forwarders route through Milwaukee or Green Bay.
