Teak and imported sal timber, hand-shaped into massive wooden dhows, remain the signature output of Mandvi on India's Gulf of Kutch. The Kharwa shipwrights here still build mast-less freight vessels of 300 to over 1,500 tonnes, sustaining a craft tradition more than four centuries old. As a commercial freight gateway, however, Mandvi is of limited relevance: an open roadstead and a cargo pier of just 3.4 m rule out container vessels and standardised customs clearance. Forwarders moving containers, bulk or project cargo through Kutch rely instead on the deep-water ports of Mundra and Kandla (Deendayal).
