In the eighteenth century Mandal thrived on salmon and timber, its pines and oaks shipped to the Dutch to build canal houses and merchant fleets. Norway's southernmost town, set at the mouth of the Mandalselva, still works cargo today as part of the Port of Kristiansand, across three basins at Mandal, Gismerøya and Kleven. The trade is timber, general and industrial cargo rather than containers: the Strømsvika timber quay runs to 120 metres at about 11 metres depth, and the Gismerøya quay to 170 metres at 10.5 metres. Roughly 400 vessels and some 84,000 tonnes of cargo are handled each year. Shipbuilding and steel production anchor the local economy alongside tourism. Forwarders with containerised cargo for southern Norway should look to Kristiansand itself.
