Coffee, cloves and bananas from the highlands set the tone of trade at Manakara, on Madagascar's south-eastern coast. Built in 1936 together with the 163-kilometre railway down from Fianarantsoa, the port is the line's seaward terminus and lies on the Pangalanes Canal. Cargo crosses an open roadstead by lighter, the rail link carrying roughly 17,000 tonnes of goods a year, while consumer products move inland in return. Shallow water and surf rule out container operations here. For larger or containerised consignments, Toamasina remains the relevant gateway.
