Reficar, the Cartagena refinery run by Ecopetrol's subsidiary, anchors the industrial waterfront at Mamonal southeast of Cartagena. The port is made up of privately owned industrial and petrochemical berths about five nautical miles from the city harbour, set among an oil refinery, cement works, a fertiliser plant and a petrochemical complex. Cargo here is dominated by liquid and dry bulk, supplemented by general, breakbulk and project shipments through terminals such as Puerto Buenavista. Berths take breakbulk vessels up to roughly 282 m length and 18 m draft, as well as bulk carriers and tankers. Container liner services, however, are handled at the adjacent Contecar and SPRC terminals in Cartagena proper. Forwarders therefore split flows: bulk and industrial cargo to Mamonal, boxes to the Cartagena container terminals.
