Majuro is less a conventional cargo terminal than the world's busiest tuna transshipment anchorage: in 2022 some 191,000 tonnes of skipjack moved through it, yet only about 3 percent was landed locally. Most of that transfer happens ship-to-ship inside the sheltered lagoon of Majuro Atoll (UN/LOCODE MH MAJ), capital of the Marshall Islands, where purse seiners offload to reefer carrier vessels at anchor. The atoll is also the country's principal commercial port, handling feeder-container imports (operators include Matson and Kyowa) and fuel for the islands. Hinterland connectivity is minimal, limited to the narrow atoll road. Intercontinental container volumes route through hubs such as Guam and Honolulu, while Ebeye/Kwajalein provides additional capacity within the Marshalls.
