Built and operated by Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group, Mailiao (UN/LOCODE TW MLI) is the private industrial harbour serving the Mailiao petrochemical complex in Yunlin County – described by the group as the world's largest single petrochemical site. Its navigation channel reaches about 24 metres, the deepest in Taiwan, allowing crude carriers of up to 300,000 tonnes to berth. Throughput is dominated by crude oil, naphtha, LPG and refined products, feeding a refinery that processes roughly 25 million tonnes of crude a year (540,000 barrels per day), alongside coal landed for the on-site cogeneration plant. This is a dedicated energy and chemicals port rather than a public container facility. Containerised cargo for the region is handled at Taichung to the north and Kaohsiung to the south, with hinterland links via road and in-plant pipelines.
