Better known for horse-drawn carriages and bicycles than for cargo handling, Mackinac Island is a car-free tourist island in the Straits of Mackinac. All goods reach it by passenger and freight ferry across the Straits — Arnold Freight Company runs the long-standing service — and there is no commercial terminal for containers, bulk or liner traffic. Its freight relevance is therefore confined to island resupply rather than through-cargo. Containerised or larger consignments are handled at mainland Great Lakes ports, with Mackinaw City and St. Ignace serving only as ferry gateways.
