For more than four decades after oil was discovered in the Campos Basin in the mid-1970s, Macaé served as Petrobras's principal supply base for the offshore fields off Rio de Janeiro state. Operated as the Port of Imbetiba, it shipped diesel, fresh water, drilling supplies, general cargo and liquid and solid bulk out to the exploration and production units at sea, rather than handling containers or liner trade. Since 2018 most of that supply traffic has shifted to the better-equipped Porto do Açu, and Macaé has been repositioned as a special-operations port focused on subsea engineering and ocean-terminal services. Its shallow river approach and supply-vessel berths make it unsuitable for conventional commercial freight. Forwarders moving containers, project or heavy-lift cargo should route via Porto do Açu (São João da Barra) or the Port of Rio de Janeiro, while Macaé remains the reference point for oil-and-gas service logistics.
