About 100 kilometres up the Saloum River from the sea, Lyndiane is the loading point for Kaolack, Senegal's main groundnut trading and processing town. A peanut-oil plant in the Lyndiane district operates its own wharf, and salt won from the salines along the river is the port's other staple export. With a quay depth of only around 4.9 metres, Lyndiane is restricted to small coasters and lighters rather than ocean-going box ships. There is no large-scale container or liner service here; such cargo and customs clearance run through the deep-water Port of Dakar. Road and rail link the port to the Sine-Saloum groundnut belt inland. As a specialised agricultural and salt port, Lyndiane fills a clear regional niche.
