Iron ore defines Luleå: the Ore Harbour loads around 4.2 million tonnes a year, the bulk of the cargo that makes this Sweden's northernmost major port. At the Victoria Harbour, roughly 1.2 million tonnes of coal plus raw materials for steelmaking are discharged annually, taking total throughput to about 7 million tonnes across some 530 vessel calls. Icebreakers keep the Gulf of Bothnia channel open through winter, allowing year-round operation in the Arctic. The port is tightly bound to the SSAB steelworks and LKAB mining group; SSAB's new, largely fossil-free plant due by 2028 will reshape future volumes. The Malmporten dredging project (under way April 2024 to December 2026), Sweden's largest modern dredging scheme, aims to admit bulk carriers of up to 160,000 tonnes, against roughly 60,000 today. Container traffic is negligible, so forwarders route boxes via Gävle or Gothenburg. Winter ice conditions and possible icebreaker fees belong in any transit plan.
