Each shipping season the steamship SS Badger, the largest car ferry ever to sail Lake Michigan, casts off from Ludington bound for Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The crossing carries cars, RVs, coaches, motorcycles and, importantly for freight, commercial trucks and over-dimensional loads as a US-10 shortcut across the lake. Ludington has no container or bulk-handling infrastructure; its cargo role is limited to accompanied road freight during the ferry season. For forwarders it functions as a RoRo link rather than a conventional transhipment port. For containerised or year-round cargo, Milwaukee and Muskegon are the more practical Lake Michigan alternatives.
