Manganese, fish and offshore-support cargo define Lüderitz far more than containers: this is a multipurpose dry-bulk port serving southern Namibia and South Africa's adjacent Northern Cape. Its roughly 500 m main berth carries about 8.75 m of water and handles mainly dry bulk, above all South African manganese that is stored and re-exported here at around 700,000 tonnes a year. The port also underpins the fishing industry and acts as a base for offshore mining and southern-coast oil and gas work. For containers or larger volumes, Walvis Bay, about 254 nautical miles north, is the natural alternative.
