At 5.76 kilometres, the conveyor jetty reaching out from Lucinda into the Coral Sea ranks among the longest service piers anywhere, and it carries essentially one commodity: raw sugar. The cane is milled at the Victoria and Macnade factories of the Herbert River district around Ingham, then stored in sheds holding more than 230,000 tonnes before loading. A single berth takes fully laden Panamax vessels, filling up to 25,000 tonnes in under a day, with the belt needing about 22 minutes end to end. Sugar Terminals Limited runs the facility, and the main cargo destinations are Canada and Malaysia. Lucinda is a dedicated bulk-sugar export point, not a container or general-cargo port, and it offers no customs clearance for third-party freight. Shippers needing containers, breakbulk or full customs services use the Port of Townsville, roughly 100 kilometres to the south. Road links serve the Herbert valley hinterland; there is no dedicated export rail line.
