Once, after Boston and Philadelphia, the busiest port in North America, Louisbourg today trades on its 18th-century fortress and a small inshore fishing fleet rather than on commercial cargo. Its ice-free natural harbour on Cape Breton Island handled thousands of tonnes of French, West Indian and New England goods in the 1740s, but there is no container, breakbulk or customs cargo operation here now. Shippers serving Cape Breton route freight through the Port of Sydney nearby, or through Halifax for international container traffic.
