Around 200,000 tonnes of cargo a year pass over Lota's quays — mostly seafood, some coal and general cargo — on the Biobío coast of southern Chile. The port grew from Matías Cousiño's coal-mining venture after 1852 and was a leading coal outlet until the mine closed in 1997, after which fishing and small-scale industrial trade took over. Its single terminal has two berths totalling about 500 metres, suited to mid-sized general-cargo and fishing vessels, backed by roughly 3,000 m² of warehousing and modest cold storage for seafood. There is no container line service here, so containerised or larger shipments are better routed through nearby Coronel or the San Vicente/Talcahuano terminals near Concepción. For shippers, Lota is a useful local fishing and breakbulk port rather than a regional gateway.
