Founded as a coal-mining company town in 1906, Longyearbyen is today the administrative centre and principal port of Svalbard. Its quays — including the old Coal Pier, a general-cargo berth and a floating tourist jetty — make it the supply hub for Spitsbergen's settlements and a growing cruise destination. With the closure of Mine 7, the last Norwegian coal mine, in mid-2025, coal shipments are fading while supply, research and tourism traffic rise. Goods reach the archipelago by sea from mainland Norway, as there is no road network beyond the town. Environmental rules permit only light marine gas oil, not heavy fuel oil, aboard visiting ships. There is no conventional container line; regular freight is consolidated via Tromsø on the mainland.
