Long Harbour in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, ships around 50,000 tonnes of finished nickel annually from Vale's dedicated processing plant, making it a single-user industrial port rather than a public cargo hub. Inbound vessels bring nickel concentrate from the Voisey's Bay mine in Labrador along with limestone for the refining process, while outbound shipments carry finished nickel, cobalt and copper products to international customers. There is no container or general cargo handling at Long Harbour itself; commercial import-export freight for the region is cleared through facilities at nearby St. John's or Argentia, which also serve as practical alternative ports. Road access runs via the Trans-Canada Highway, since Newfoundland has had no operating rail network since 1988. The plant reached commercial production in 2014 and has since become a fixed link in Vale's Labrador-to-Newfoundland nickel supply chain.
