Containers, reefer goods and metal transhipment define the modest cargo role of Lomonosov, the former Oranienbaum on the southern Gulf of Finland. Long held under naval control, the port was later opened to commercial traffic some 40 nautical miles west of St Petersburg. Shallow depths of around five metres restrict it to smaller vessels, making it a niche feeder rather than a deep-sea terminal. The car ferry that once linked it to Kronstadt closed in 2011, replaced by the St Petersburg ring-road causeway. Since the 2022 sanctions, access for EU shippers is heavily constrained and must be verified in advance. Larger container and bulk volumes route through the Big Port of St Petersburg, Bronka or Ust-Luga.
