Lome has become the container gateway of West Africa, the only deep-water port on this stretch of the Gulf of Guinea coast and Togo's principal harbour. Handling around 2 million TEU in 2024, up 5.2 percent, it ranks among Africa's top five container ports. Recent dredging gives it up to 16.6 m of draft and a 1,050 m continuous quay, allowing it to work vessels of up to 24,000 TEU. The Lome Container Terminal (LCT, operated by Terminal Investment/MSC) provides nine ship-to-shore cranes, 24 yard cranes and a 50-hectare yard, with capacity near 2.7 million TEU. In March 2025 it set a continental record of 123,000 container moves in a single month. Much of the traffic is transshipment, with Lome redistributing boxes to smaller feeder ports around the Gulf of Guinea. It ranked 92nd in the 2025 Lloyd's List, the only sub-Saharan African port in the global top 100. By road it also serves the landlocked markets of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. For forwarders, Lome is therefore the regional hub for containerised and project cargo, while Abidjan, Tema and Cotonou offer alternative direct calls.
