2.06 million TEU in 2024, up 8% on the previous year, place Lome (TG LFW) among Africa's five largest container ports and make it the container hub of West Africa. Togo's main port on the Bight of Benin ranked 92nd in the 2025 Lloyd's List, the only sub-Saharan African port in the global top 100. Dredging carried out between late July and mid-September 2025 at a cost of EUR 7.5 million took the access channel to 18.60 metres and widened the turning basin to 550 metres, so fully laden ships of up to 24,000 TEU can now be worked. The Lome Container Terminal (LCT) is a joint venture between China Merchants Port Holdings and Terminal Investment Limited, MSC's terminal arm, with nine ship-to-shore cranes, 24 yard cranes and about 50 hectares of yard. The dredging forms part of a EUR 120 million programme running to 2027 that also covers quay reinforcement, new fendering and two additional ship-to-shore cranes, lifting annual capacity from 2 to 2.5 million TEU. Much of the traffic is transhipment, with boxes fed on to smaller ports around the Gulf of Guinea, alongside breakbulk, vehicles and project cargo. By road the port serves landlocked Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger; such consignments travel under customs transit seal and are cleared in the destination country, so complete documentation before arrival matters.
