Around 1.5 million tonnes of freight a year are projected to move through Lobito once the rebuilt corridor reaches full capacity. Sitting on Angola's Atlantic coast, this deep-water port has become the preferred export outlet for copper and cobalt mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. Forwarders moving mining or project cargo out of south-central Africa increasingly route it through Lobito rather than the longer eastern corridors to Dar es Salaam. Customs and concession arrangements fall under the 30-year LAR agreement, so shippers should confirm current terminal procedures before booking.
