Around 381,000 TEU moved through Livorno's main box facility, the Darsena Toscana Terminal (TDT), in 2024, rising about 18% to some 450,000 TEU in 2025; the terminal is now part of the Grimaldi Group, with additional boxes passing through the Lorenzini terminal. One of Italy's leading ro-ro ports, Livorno shifts around 2 million tonnes of rolling freight a year on ferry and trailer services to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and Spain. Cars, forest products and breakbulk complement the container and ro-ro trades, with reefer points for temperature-controlled cargo. Its hinterland spans Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and the Marche, linked by motorway and a dedicated rail terminal. Customs and import clearance run through the Italian customs agency within the EU. The €550 million-plus Darsena Europa project, whose first stone was laid in July 2025, is building a new deep-water container terminal with a 17-metre access channel due to open around 2030, with MSC and the Grimaldi Group both bidding to build and run it. For pure deep-sea container volumes, the Genoa–La Spezia range currently offers more capacity, while Livorno's strength lies in combined container, ro-ro and breakbulk handling.
