Around 381,000 TEU moved through Livorno's main box facility, the Darsena Toscana Terminal (TDT), in 2024, rising about 18% to some 450,000 TEU in 2025; the terminal belongs to the Grimaldi Group, Hapag-Lloyd is a container partner there, and additional boxes pass through the Lorenzini terminal. One of Italy's leading ro-ro ports, Livorno (IT LIV) shifts around 2 million tonnes of rolling freight a year on ferry and trailer services to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and Spain. Cars, forest products and breakbulk complement the container and ro-ro trades, with reefer points for temperature-controlled cargo. Its hinterland spans Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and the Marche, linked by motorway and a dedicated rail terminal, with clearance through the Italian customs agency inside the EU. The €550 million-plus Darsena Europa project, begun in July 2025, is building a deep-water container terminal with a 17-metre access channel sized for at least 1.6 million TEU. Two camps are competing for the concession: TDT/Grimaldi has applied for 50% of the facility under a 30-year, €180 million plan with commercial start in 2030, while MSC is preparing a bid worth more than €400 million with the local Neri and Lorenzini groups and opposes splitting the quay line; first yard areas are expected from 2026-2027. For pure deep-sea container volumes the Genoa-La Spezia range currently offers more capacity, while Livorno's strength lies in combined container, ro-ro and breakbulk handling.
