Opened in 2016 as a £400 million deep-water facility, Liverpool2 lets the Port of Liverpool berth container ships of up to 380 metres and 13,500 TEU directly on the River Mersey. Operated by Peel Ports alongside the older Royal Seaforth Container Terminal, the port is moving toward roughly 1 million TEU in 2025 against a 1.5 million TEU capacity. Its position on the west coast serves the consumption centres of Manchester, Leeds and the Midlands, easing pressure on the congested south-eastern ports. Hinterland links run by road, rail and the Manchester Ship Canal, which carries barges to inland terminals. Beyond containers, Liverpool handles dry bulk, breakbulk, forest products and liquid cargo. The weekly TA2 transatlantic service run by MSC and Maersk, which shifted its UK call from Felixstowe to Liverpool, now gives the port direct links to the US east coast. Since Brexit, customs and import clearance go through the UK's CDS system, outside the EU customs union. For south-east England, Felixstowe and Southampton remain the natural alternatives.
