Pulp, newsprint, sawn timber, fishmeal and fresh fruit make up the bulk of what moves across the quays at Lirquén, one of Chile's leading privately operated ports just north of Concepción in the Biobío Region. Run by DP World, the multipurpose facility spreads six berths across two piers — Pier 1 for break-bulk and dry bulk (up to 12.8 m draft) and Pier 2 for container vessels (up to 15.7 m). In 2025 the port set a throughput record of more than 6.2 million tonnes, driven by a 15 percent rise in break-bulk and over 450,000 TEU handled, against a total capacity of around 7 million tonnes. DP World commissioned two new specialised cranes in 2025 to handle growing volumes of cellulose. A dedicated rail link connects the port to central Chile's interior and its copper-mining belt, complemented by Route 5 for road haulage. Customs and export clearance follow Chilean standards through the regional Aduana. For shippers needing wider container line coverage, San Antonio and San Vicente/Talcahuano are the practical alternatives.
