Where Lipari once loaded ships with volcanic pumice, the trade all but ended after quarrying stopped in 2007 to protect the UNESCO World Heritage site. The main quay at Sottomonastero now works mainly as a ferry and hydrofoil terminal for the Aeolian Islands, with year-round links to Milazzo on Sicily and up to 22 sailings a day in high season. On the cargo side, traffic is essentially island supply: breakbulk plus drinking water delivered by tanker from Sicily, with no container terminal. The hinterland is the island itself, served by a limited road network and no rail. For containerised or larger commercial loads, the Sicilian ports of Milazzo, Messina or Palermo are the right call.
